Beyond the Campus Tour: How to Make the Most of Your University Visit

Visiting a university campus is an invaluable step in the journey toward finding the right fit for higher education. A well-planned visit can provide insights far beyond what brochures or virtual tours can offer. At Archer Franklin, we encourage students and families to approach campus visits with curiosity, purpose, and a touch of creativity. Here’s how to turn a standard tour into a transformative experience:

1. Plan to Spend the Whole Day

Campus visits are not quick stops. Immerse yourself fully, experiencing the rhythm of life at the university. Go beyond the main attractions to explore hidden corners: libraries, student centres, and quiet study nooks often reveal the heartbeat of the campus.

We also recommend a “less is more” approach. While it may be tempting to visit as many campuses as possible in one area, trying to cram multiple visits into a single day can be overwhelming. Be intentional about the campuses you choose to visit, dedicating ample time to make the most of your experience at each one.

2. Go Beyond the Tour

Official university tours are designed to impress, showcasing the institution's best features. While these are valuable, they often feel rehearsed. To gain a more authentic perspective, consider these activities:

  • Eat in the Dining Hall: Sit down for a meal on campus and observe. Are students animated and engaged? The dining hall is often the social hub of campus life.

  • Seek out Student Spaces: Look for natural gathering spots on campus. Where do students congregate between classes? What areas seem to be the hubs of activity?

  • Eavesdrop—just a little: Listen to the conversations happening around you. What are students talking about—academics, campus life, upcoming events? These insights can offer a glimpse into the campus culture.

  • Explore Student Accommodation: Ask to see the dormitories where students actually live, not just the model rooms highlighted on the tour. Seeing authentic living spaces will give you a clearer sense of what life on campus might really feel like.

3. Sit in on a Class

There’s no better way to understand the academic environment than to experience it directly. Contact the admissions office to ask if you can attend a lecture or seminar during your visit. Consider:

  • Are lectures held in large halls or smaller discussion-based settings?

  • Does the teaching style suit your learning preferences?

Some students thrive in intimate, hands-on learning environments, while others feel energised in large lecture theatres. Sitting in on a class can help you determine which is best for you.

4. Talk to Current Students

Speaking with current students is one of the most valuable aspects of a campus visit. Ask candid questions about their academic and social lives, their favourite parts of campus, and even their regrets or surprises. Their honest answers will provide perspectives that go beyond what university staff can offer.

5. Picture Your Day-to-Day Life

Consider your interests and routines, and imagine how they’d fit into campus life. For instance, one of our students who loves skateboarding brought her board to test out the campus paths and parks during her visit. Think about your favourite hobbies, study habits, or relaxation activities, and explore how the university might support them.

6. Meet with Admissions and Faculty

Always take the opportunity to connect with admissions representatives and faculty members. These meetings can clarify academic programmes, research opportunities, and campus resources. Use this time to ask specific questions about your intended major or extracurricular interests.

7. Ask Questions!

A university education is a significant investment of your time and money. There are no silly questions—this is your chance to be a smart shopper. Ask about everything from academic culture and campus traditions to study abroad programmes and career support services. Understanding these aspects will help you make an informed decision.

Turning a Visit into a Vision

A campus visit is more than just seeing the buildings; it’s about experiencing the environment and picturing yourself as part of the community. With intentionality and a bit of exploration, you can leave each visit with clarity and confidence about whether a university is the right fit for you.
